The Heart and Circulatory System

The efficient functioning of the heart and circulatory system are essential for health, everyday activity and sporting performance. In this chapter, we will learn about key components of the heart and circulatory system and their relation to exercise and health. 

Learning Outcomes: 

By the end of the chapter you should be able to:

  • Describe the basic structure of the heart (level 2 revision)
  • State the names, location and functions of the heart valves (Semi-lunar, bicuspid, tricuspid)
  • Describe blood supply to the myocardium by means of the coronary arteries
  • Understand the relationship between regular physical activity and improved coronary blood-flow
  • Define arteriosclerosis and describe the mechanism of plaque formation seen in atherosclerosis
  • List the lifestyles changes that can be adhered to in order to decrease the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD)
  • Define blood pressure classifications and associated health risks
  • Explain the short-term and long-term effects of exercise on blood pressure, including the valsalva effect
  • Explain the benefits and risks of cardiovascular training
